Since then we've had a few more Little Nemo revivals (such as Big New Dreams and Dream Another Dream) and they're motivated primarily by love for Winsor McCay's work.

Simply because our standards have changed, it doesn't mean that we're dishonoring McCay's work - his work has been archived and re-released for new generations to enjoy, alongside new interpretations.

Flip behaving badly isn't a problem in itself - as you say, he's usually a bad influence on Nemo. But if you want contemporary children to read new stories with that character then he can't be a slave owner or smoke cigars - not if you want parents to approve of the book.Michael Hoskinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11302540308587868138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5146591810616867072.post-6560409834191963682021-10-16T05:56:47.463-06:002021-10-16T05:56:47.463-06:00Are characters supposed to be always good. Flip is often a quite bad character, and that's part of the dynamic. Sometimes, you are stuck with not so good people. Besides, it's slumberland, where everything is a caricature, I would not take it too seriously given the epoch. When you look at recent attempts, you can clearly see it's a shame we authorize ourselves to spit on masterpieces like that.
